The Cronicles Frequently Asked Questions.
What is a MUD?
MUDs have been around since the 1980's. The original MUD was created by a group of college students, and was called DIKUMud. This progressed into many other kinds of MUDs, such as the one The Cronicles is based on: CircleMUD. MUDs is a text-based Internet game. It is somewhat like D&D: you create a character, kill monsters, raise levels, and get better and better. The ultimate goal in The Cronicles is to become a HERO, or level 60. At HERO, you gain special skills, can use special HERO-Only equipment, and gain the admiration of everyone in the MUD.
How do I play a MUD?
You must connect using Telnet or a specialized MUD Client. It is highly suggested and encouraged to get a specialized MUD Client. For Windows, the generally best one is Zmud. For Macintosh, it is Rapscallion. For both Linux and BeOS TinTin and its remakes are the best.
What is a MUD Cilent?
A MUD Client is a Telnet-Based application specifically made to play MUDs. They inable you to see colors, use triggers, aliases, and more. It is highly suggested to download a MUD Client in order to play The Cronicles. They are usually free.
Whats so great about The Cronicles of Sallares, anyway?
The Cronicles, in its eighth years in existence, has progressed greatly. We have a massive world, with over ? rooms in it. We have a huge player base, of which, most are friendly. We also have a highly skilled and dedicated Immortal Staff, who make the MUD better every day.
How much time does playing a MUD take?
It depends. Unlike some games, you can play for as much or little time as you want. Of course, to get very powerful requires a fairly large time commitment, but you can enjoy yourself just fine in only a few moments of playing. Be warned, however, that The Cronicles has been found to be very addictive : ).
What class should I choose?
There are five classes on The Cronicles: Warrior, Cleric, Mage, Assassin, and Shaman. Each has specialties indifferent things. Here is a list of the classes and their strengths.
Warriors are fairly balanced at both Player-Killing and Monster-Killing. The class focuses on doing direct damage though weapons and battle techniques, not magic. They are also the easiest to level of the five classes, and are very powerful at high levels.
Clerics are, of course, the best healers of the five classes. They have increasingly powerful spells that can bind wounds and increase fighting prowess. They are also extremely talented at direct combat as well, and can be a menace to any Outlaw.
Mages are focused toward doing magical damage. They have numerous damaging spells at their disposal, and they become very powerful at high levels. However, they are physically weak, and usually cannot stand up to a direct fight with a Warrior or Assassin.
Assassins' fighting style is to do very quick damage, try and kill their enemies as fast as possible. They have at their disposal a backstabbing skill, which does many times as much damage as what a normal attack would do. They also gain the ability to do two consecutive backstabs in quick succession, which can be devastating to anyone -- man or beast.
Shamans have the ability to summon spirit manifestations to fight with them. As the Shaman develops, as do the spirits it can summon. At low levels, the spirits are fairly weak, however, as the shaman gets more and more powerful, as do the spirits. At hero, few can stand up to an army of the monsters. Shamans also have many powerful damage and healing spells at their disposal.
What alignment should I choose?
Alignment is partially based on your class, and your role-playing style. For example, if you are choosing to be an assassin, you should probably be evil. Most equipment that is made for assassins also requires that you be evil. Shamans, though powerful in all alignments, tend to be much weaker evil. Warriors can be powerful at any alignment, as can clerics and mages. However, if you wish to be an unsuggested alignment, go ahead, you'll just have more fun.
What are stats?
Statistics or "stats" are the measurement of your characters strengths and weaknesses. There are six basic stats, all of which are between 3 and 22. The current measurements are as follows.
Strength (Str) : This is a measurement of the character's brute strength. The more strength you have the higher damage you can do. Having high strength is very important to both Warriors and Assassins.
Intelligence (Int) : This is a measurement of the character's intelligence, cunning, and knowledge. Casting spells requires a great focus and intelligence, and is therefore very important to the Magic Using classes (Clerics, Mages, and Shamans). Fighters will also be more able to predict the movements and attacks of a monster, therefore making it easier to dodge and attack it.
Wisdom (Wis) : This is a measurement of the character's prudence and understanding. Though unimportant for most daily activities, it does come in great use when doing more advanced techniques of fighting, raising levels, and casting spells.
Dexterity (Dex) : This is a measurement of the character's deftness, skill, artfulness, and ability to dodge things. This is also used in the ability to hit someone, and many skills. Having high dexterity is vital to both assassins and warriors.
Constitution (Con) : This is a measurement of the character's overall health. Though worthless in normal gameplay, when raising levels, it is very important. The higher your constitution, the more hit points you gain by raising.
Charisma (Cha) : This is a measurement of the character's beauty and charm. This is basically useless for all classes other than Shamans. For shamans, it is very, very important. The higher the charisma, the more spirits you can control at one time.
How do I roll stats?
When you create your character you roll "dice" and from those dice you can choose which goes into which stat. You can upgrade each stat with 30 points after you choose your basic stats. You can reroll the original dice up to 5 times, including the first roll.
Can I re-roll stats after I make my character?
No. In order to change your stats, you must delete and recreate so roll right the first time : ).
How can I talk to people?
There are many channels available on The Cronicles. At level 1, however, you cannot use global gossip and IC channels for security purposes. You can say things using the say (abbreviated by ' ) and the message, which will be heard by everyone in the room. You can also tell things directly to a character, using the format tell <character> <message>. Once at level 2 or above, you may use OOC (out of character channel, sent to all non-deaf non-anti-sound characters in the mud), IC (in character channel) and grats (a channel for congrating people, like after they raised a level, etc). We also have a private channel which can be opened at will, and whoever opens the channel decides who can private-say on it.
How do you play?
The basic idea of a MUD is that you are a character in a room, with other characters, monsters, items, etc. Most rooms have "links" to other rooms, which allow you to move around. There are six total directions used: north, south, east, west, up, and down. You may attack a monster using the kill command, see your current statistics using the score command, etc. More commands can be found online, by typing help commands. When you first join the game with a new character read everything you see and go through the intoduction.
What are the basic commands?
A list of commands can be found online by simply typing commands. Most to
all of these have a help file written for these, which you can access by typing
help <command
name>.
Im lost, how can I get back to the Temple?
You may type "newbie" before you pass level 5 to get back to the temple. after that you will need to use scrolls of recall or a spell. Scrolls of recall can be obtained at the magic shop (s 7;w 3;s;e from the Temple).
What's the point of the game?
The reason that The Cronicles was created was to have fun. Some, however, will tell you that it is to get to HERO or become Immortal. Either one is valid.
Where should I level?
Where you level is largely based on your equipment and stats. At the lowest level, you should use the newbie zone (s 5;e from the Temple of the Nameless) or the chessboard (s 7;w 3;n 5;e 2;n 5;w;n;w). From there, its your choice. Type help areas for more information. the ";" is a break so you can use multiple commands in one line.
What is equipment (eq)?
Equipment, or EQ, is things you wear and use. These include lights, rings, neck wear, body armor, leg wear, boots, gloves, sleeves, shields, cloaks, belts bracelets, weapons, and things to be held. There are a total of eighteen places EQ can be used. EQ is meant to make you more powerful, usually affecting your stats in positive ways. Some EQ is really poweful for an ability yet it may have negitives that make it a harder decision to use. One of the great parts about The Cronicles is that you can make your character whatever you want.
Where can I get good equipment?
Experience in the game can teach you where to get good equipment. Asking people is always a good method.
Um... I died... what happens now?
Unlike some games, when you die, the game is not over. You are forced out of the game, and, when you reenter, you are in the temple at 1 hp and have no EQ. Your equipment can be found inside your "corpse" (an object) that falls in the room that you died in. Be careful, though, for if you wait too long to retrieve your things, your corpse will rot, making the EQ fair game to anyone (Non-outlaws corpses are protected from looting). The "loot me" command will get all your stuff from your corpse.
How much experience does it take to raise levels?
The experience that is required at each level is different for each class. Type level to see each level and the experience required for them.
It seems like one billion experience is a heck of a lot... is it?
Yes, it is a great deal. However, don't worry too much. As you gain levels, the experience that you can gain goes up greatly. You won't be stuck in the newbie zone getting 100 experience each kill for long.
What are the rules of this game?
Type policy for a list of the most current rules.
What happens if I don't play by the rules?
There are several punishments that we may institute. Mostly, however, the punishment fits the crime. A small infraction will receive an equally small punishment, however, something large, such as hacking, may get you banned from playing our game.
How can I become an Immortal?
To become immortal on The Cronicles you must first get to level 60, then make a request to be immortalized. We won't let just anyone in, and usually we will require that you have a skill you are willing to use (such as coding, building, questing, etc.) Type help immortal to find out more.
How long does it take to "hero"?
With the new changes in version 3.7 it takes a little longer to hero, but you can have a powerful character at 55 with the Alternative Advancement or Altadv ability.
What is Atlernative Advancement (altadv)?
Alternative advancement is a new way of gaining skills or abilites when you are a higher level. At level 55 you are given the option to use altadv. If you choose to do so you will take a section of your experience gained and use it for altadv. Altadv skill points cost a lot of experience and take some time to get.
People are being mean to me... what should I do?
We wish to keep the mud enjoyable for all people. Jerks are not appreciated. If someone is being excessively rude to you, please tell an immortal about it. They will help you.
What is player-killing (Outlaw)?
The Outlaw system is a fairly complicated way of fighting players. Being outlaw lets you attack, and be attacked by another outlaw. If you kill one, you get a lot of experience, and the ability to take their some of their EQ. If you wish to become an outlaw, simply type outlaw. Be careful, though, because you may die, and when you do, there is nothing protecting your corpse from being looted from another outlaw.
Why is this page in Green and Black?
The game is commonly seen in Color text, light green for text, some of the more important text is colored.
